Carla Lindsay (Faust) Giuffrida, age 75, passed away on December 1, 2021 at Westchester Medical Center. Her two loving children were by her side, her hands in theirs. Born in Hollywood, California on September 27, 1946, Carla was the only child of Ernest and Barbara (Bush) Faust. She made a career as a Montessori and fiber arts teacher at the Homestead School in Glen Spey, NY, where she spent nearly 30 years, retiring in 2016.
Growing up, Carla and her family would split time between their home in Malibu Canyon, which was built by Carla’s father, and summers living on their boat, usually docked at Catalina Island. In keeping with their fundamental belief that life is better when it is spent on or near the sea, they would spend most of their free time sailing or cruising the waters of Southern California. Her family loved the ocean and the islands, with Hawai’i maintaining a place of prominence. After living there for a year, Hawai’i would remain a major part of her family’s life, eventually bringing her children to visit her mother, their “Tutu,” every year for the holidays.
After returning to the San Fernando Valley of California, where she attended high school and college, Carla met her soulmate, Mauro Giuffrida, at Cal State Northridge. They fell instantly in love and were married on September 9, 1967. Carla and Mauro remained happily married for 49 years and were an example to all of us of what true love is. They moved to Brooklyn, NY shortly after marrying, where Mauro pursued his Masters of Fine Arts degree at Pratt Institute and Carla went on to open Coulter Studios, a yarn and knitting boutique in Midtown Manhattan.
Carla was selfless, compassionate and a dear friend and inspiration to all she knew. A self-taught master fiber artist, she was happiest while knitting or weaving, producing the most breathtaking pieces of art for her and her beloved family. Through her life’s work as a teacher, Carla passed on this passion to countless children and adults, enriching their lives and making the world a more beautiful place. After retirement, Carla continued to share her passion with friends and strangers alike. She would host weekly knitting circles and always came with new projects and learning tools for her grandchildren at each visit. Predeceased by her parents and husband, she is survived by her son Mauro, daughter Lindsay, and her grandchildren Natasha, Isabella, Liviana, Owen, Eliza and Massimo.
Those that knew Carla knew that she lived a life of gratitude and never took any of its beauty for granted. Like her husband, Carla was unique, creative and passionate. Her presence in any room brought a ray of light that warmed everyone’s heart. However, Carla’s gift was more than this. It was that, after spending time with her, no matter how sad or uncertain one was, they came away knowing that there was still honest and true love and kindness in the world, and that, if you “count your blessings,” the ledger would no doubt be in your favor.
Carla’s presence in all our lives will be truly missed forever. She will be buried next to her sweetheart in their adopted home town of Eldred, NY. A celebration of life will be held for her at Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home, in Barryville, NY, on Thursday, December 9, 2021, from 1pm to 3pm. In lieu of flowers, she would prefer donations be made in her memory to The Delaware River Keeper Network https://www.delawareriverkeeper.org/ or to Planned Parenthood https://www.plannedparenthood.org./
