Durward (Dur) Ora Powell

Cochecton, NY

February 22, 2021

Durward (Dur) Ora Powell, a lifelong resident of Cochecton, NY, died Monday, February 22, 2021 at home surrounded by his wife and sons.  Born November 18, 1950 in Callicoon, NY, he was the son of Ora Fred and Lavina (Jay) Powell. Durward attended school at the Washington Heights Elementary School in Middletown NY where he lived from 1950 to 1963.  In 1963, Durward moved to Cochecton, NY with his family where he attended high school at Narrowsburg Central School, graduating in June of 1969.

After graduating from high school, he went to work for the Town of Cochecton Highway Department until he was drafted in the U.S. Army.      Completing basic training at Fort Dix, NJ he was transferred to Fort Gordon, GA where he trained as Military Policeman and dog handler.  He served with the military in South Korea from 1969 -1972 stationed on the demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea.

Returning home, he resumed work with the Town of Cochecton Highway Department, a position he held for 26 years as a foreman and heavy equipment operator.  On June 1, 1974, he married Nancy Louise Rohrmann at the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church.  Durward and Nancy have two sons, Bryon and Chad.

Anyone and everyone who knew or loved Dur, knew that there was only one way to do anything, and that was Dur’s way.  Dur loved his wife and his two wonderful sons, as well as his brother, sister-in-laws, brother-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, nephews and nieces as only he could.

Dur dreamed many dreams and made sure that they became a reality. He first dreamed of owning a home and he, his brother and many friends helped build that dream into a reality.  We’ve lived in that home for over forty years.  He dreamed of owning a street rod and with his brother’s help that became a reality and a prized possession.  He dreamed of having a pond, and he made sure that also became a reality.  We have enjoyed many days of swimming, playing and fishing because of that dream.  He spent many evenings at the pond, watching and feeding his fish.  He dreamed of owning his own business and he did that with D&N Landscaping and Firehouse Antiques.  Buying treasures and spending time with Bryon and Chad to build these businesses was one of his greatest joys.

However, his biggest dream was being surrounded by those he loved, and it was his greatest gift to us.  He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandpa and friend.  A family is a circle of love is not broken by loss, but made stronger by our wonderful memories.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy; two sons: Bryon and his wife Jenn of Cochecton NY, and Chad of Ferndale NY; brother Jay and wife Franny of Cochecton, NY; grandchildren, Ryan, Calvin and Mia; sister-in-law Gloria and husband KC Garn, sister-in-law Karen Rohrmann; nephews Cody Powell and Kienan Garn; nieces Maggie Powell and Margot Healy.

Donations may be made in Dur’s name to:  Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church and Ride to Survivie.

As per Dur’s wishes cremation will be private.  A celebration of life will be held in the Spring.
